Jan Holthoff hat bei Gerhard Merz studiert, einem der zentralen Künstler der postminimalistischen Kunst, bei Helmut Federle, einem der Maler, der die Malerei in radikaler Weise aus Energetik und formbezogener Zurückhaltung denkt. 2008 hat Jan Holthoff bei Herbert Brandl dann als Meisterschüler studiert. Die Anregungen, die er sich hier bei diesen dreien geholt hat, haben ihn zu einer eigenen Zielsetzung geführt: 'Malerei neu zu verhandeln'. 'Meine Malerei ist gestisch, abstrakt und prozessual, die Komplexität variiert', sagt er. Und das ist präzise formuliert, denn wer diese Bilder abschreitet, wie etwa in der Ausstellung in der Duisburger Kulturkirche, von der die Aufnahmen der Rauminstallationen stammen, sieht, dass die Leinwände eigentlich nichts Serielles haben, vielmehr sind die Bilder von 2024 sehr reduziert, fast kontemplativ angelegt, raumgreifend in ihrer Verbindung von Farbfeldmalerei und Expressivität. 2025 sprengt Jan Holthoff nun dieses System, arbeitet weniger mit Transparenz, sondern setzt einzelne deckende Flächen ein, die dem inneren Chaos wie Stoppsignale widerstehen. Das ist sehr gute Malerei, die eine Dialektik der Eindrücklichkeit, Variabilität und ihr mögliches Verschwinden thematisiert, ein Verschwinden, das beinahe die gesamte Menschheit derzeit auf kleinen Bildschirmen erlebt.…
