Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. An attractive scholarly study examining the formative influence of Long Island on Walt Whitman's life, family, journalism, teaching career, and literary development. Drawing upon extensive primary research, Bertha H. Funnell - then a trustee of the W…alt Whitman Birthplace Association - chronologically traces Whitman's early years from West Hills through Brooklyn and the publication of Leaves of Grass. The volume reproduces numerous historical illustrations, manuscript facsimiles, photographs, and the celebrated Ralph Waldo Emerson letter praising Leaves of Grass, making it an appealing reference for Whitman scholars, collectors of American literature, and Long Island historians. Book is in Near Fine condition. Green cloth boards remain bright and exceptionally clean with sharp black spine lettering. Binding is square and tight, hinges are sound, and the interior is remarkably fresh with clean pages. A discreet blind ownership embossment (Library of David G. Roberts) appears on the title page along with a neatly affixed owner address label on the front free endpaper; there are no library markings. The original dust jacket is in Very Good condition, retaining the original price on the front flap. It exhibits moderate age toning, tape to interior of front flap, several small chips and short closed tears along the upper edge and spine ends, minor edge wear, and light handling marks, but remains complete and presents well in its original state. This appears to be the 1971 First Edition, First Printing published by Kennikat Press. The copyright page bears the original 1971 copyright with no indication of later printings, no revised edition statement, and the jacket corresponds to the first issue with the original $6.95 price. Although Kennikat Press did not consistently employ number lines during this period, there is no evidence suggesting a later printing. Bertha H. Funnell (1900-1990) was a Long Island historian, researcher, and author whose work focused on preserving the region's literary and cultural heritage. A graduate of Cornell University and a native of Huntington, New York, she was a direct descendant of William Rogers, one of the original settlers who helped establish Huntington in 1653. Her longstanding interest in Walt Whitman and Long Island history led her to serve as a trustee of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, where she lectured and conducted historical research. Walt Whitman on Long Island is regarded as one of her most significant contributions, drawing upon extensive primary sources to document the profound influence of Long Island on Whitman's life and work. Jacket design by Frank A. Zizzo/Associates (illustrator).
