Eugène Fromentin was a French painter and writer, born in La Rochelle. After leaving school he studied for some years under Louis Cabat, the landscape painter. Fromentin was one of the earliest pictorial interpreters of Algeria, having been able, while quite young, to visit the land and people that suggested the subjects of most of his works. Fromentin, who maintained that "art is the expression of the invisible by means of the visible", was much influenced in style by Eugène Delacroix.

"Pourquoi je ne vous ferais pas la danse des oeufs ? Mais parce que je crains que ce ne soit pas un sujet convenable au Magasin. Avez-vous vu le tabl…eau ? Ce sont trois femmes, les yeux bandés, (les grâces je suppose) qui sautent sur un petit tapis sur lequel il y a des oeufs, d'un côté un amour qui les fouette et de l'autre un autre qui leur joue du violon. Quand on a vécu et qu'on commence à se retourner en arrière, ces allégories vous semblent la vérité même [.] c'est un ordre d'idée que nous cachons avec soin à nos jeunes filles et qui leur est dévoilé la plupart du temps bien subitement et sans précaution. Ce qui doit être cause de bien des confusions, tristesses et mauvais ménages ; mais c'est aller bien loin à propos d'un petit dessin [.]". Il propose d'aller lui montrer "un carton de compositions diverses dans lesquelles vous verrez s'il y aurait quelque chose : les sujets de Sèvres sont aussi un peu dans l'ordre d'idées dessus dit pour ceux qui ont vécuet qui reviennent en arrière - le Magasin demande des sujets pensés pour lui - et il les aura".
