Contact seller5-star sellerlarge 4to (32 x 21 cm). full period German pigskin, borders and ornaments stamped in blind, 4 raised bands, blind panel boards, two metal clasps, paper spine label. (xxviii), 615, (69) pages, index at rear. Edited by the humanist Bheatus Rhenanus (Beatus Rhenanus, 1485-1547) of Selestadt with engravings by Hans Holbein the Young…er and printed by Froben in Basel. "The typographical execution of the volume is worthy of the press from which it issued. It is a book of uncommon occurrence; and, as an editio princeps, it should have a place in all libraries of any critical pretension" -Dibdin Editio Princeps, first edition (Graesse VI, 69; Dibdin I, 207-8; not in BM STC Ger.). Minor rubbing to the vellum covers, lacking the frontispiece and the title page, small "Dupl", or 'duplicate', mark, late 16th / early 17th century annotations in the margins throughout, else a near fine copy with the two metal clasps intact. Printed in Roman letter and considered the most sumptuous of the editions with fine engravings and broad margins. Lacking the title page with engravings by Ambrosius Holbein and Hans Franck. With the first page of text with metal engravings by Holbein the Younger. Printer's device on last leaf of text and verso of final leaf. Froben's interesting printing device is a pair of hands supporting an upright rod on which rests an apparently frightened dove. The attitude of the dove would seem to be justified by the proximity of the heads of two serpents whose bodies are twined around the rod. "These engravings had been used in June 1518 to illustrate the edition of the Lives of the Caesars of Suetonius (and other authors), and represent the legend of Tantalus, king of Lydia who, admitted to the table of the gods, stole nectar and ambrosia in order to give them to mortal men. Then, to test divine prescience, he killed his own son Pelops and served his flesh to the gods at a banquet. Thrown into Tartarus, Tantalus was chained to a tree, heavy with fruit, in the middle of a limpid lake. Tormented by hunger and thirst, whenever he sought to drink the water level fell below his grasp, and when he reached for the fruit they lifted out of his reach (see lower figure). The figurines at the sides evoke the story of Pelops, cut into pieces by resuscitated by Zeus/Jupiter -- represented here deliberating with Hermes/Mercury. Jupiter replaces the shoulder that Demeter/Ceres had eaten with a piece of ivory." (Charles Munier). Johann Froben (1460-1527) learned the art of printing from Johann Amerbach in Basel, and set up on his own in 1491. He was quick to use roman and italic types, the later especially for quotations, a custom he may have originated. Oswald (History of Printing134), refers to Froben as a great printer and publisher, one of the greatest of his time, ranking with Koberger in Nuremberg, Aldus in Venice, and Badius in Paris. Erasmus served him as a literary adviser and proofreader for many years, living in Froben's house as a member of the family. Froben can also be credited with the discovery of Hans Holbein, who designed many borders, initials, and other engraved decorations for Froben between 1518 and 1522. Johann Froben was succeeded by his son Hieronymus (1501-1563), who continued the business in his father's style, and published this edtion of Pliny in 1535, edited and with notes by Sigmund Gelen (1497-1554), who, with the approval of Erasmus, worked for Froben from 1524 on, frequently as a translator. Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79) divided his history of the natural world (Historia naturalis) into 37 books, dealing with geography, zoology, botany, the medicinal uses of plants, anthropology, minerology, and a history of the fine arts, among others. He died of asphyxiation in the neighborhood of Mount Vesuvius, having gone there to investigate the eruption. full period German pigskin, borders and ornaments stamped in blind, 4 raised bands, blind panel boards, two metal clasps, paper spine label. Froben, Johann (illustrator).

This copy also with contemporary finely executed rubrication and underlinings. Bound in somewhat later mottled calf, raised spine with gilt decorations and title label. Spine with restorations, joints cracked again but binding technically sound and with not many obtrusive signs of wear . Both works were rubricated by the same, first (?) owner, most probably J.Boerii, Archdyacon Z Contsen[ ] (?). His name on both title pages in the same (most probably his own) handwriting. In the second book also some marginal notes in the same hand. A John Boerius, archdeacon, is mentionned in connection with Durham cathedral around 1515. But we cannot interpret the addition Z Contsen[ ]. There are no other provenance indications apart from a small thumnail printed ex-libris of ''MN'' with the devise '' cy est mon amy le moins fol'', tipped-in on the first paste down. Nicely preserved collection of two Basle postincunables pertaining to ancient Greek philosophy and literature. Both works are extensively rubricated and colored. USTC N° 667214 and USTC N° 673353.
