Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the regency of Markgraf Jakob I of Baden and his coregency with his father Markgraf Bernhard I. Jakob's influence grew substantially in his father's later years and he was solely responsible for the governance of the margraviate from 1431 until his death in 1453. The author presents Jakob as a skilled diplomat and negotiator engaged in various conflicts, including the ongoing power struggle between the papacy and the council of Basel. Jakob also played an important role in securing the succession of his nephew and ward, Markgraf Karl I, who was only six when his father Bernhard died in 1431. The author consulted a wealth of archival research to produce this detailed account of Jakob's life and times. Rich in insights, the book sheds light on the intricate political landscape of the Holy Roman Empire during the early 15th century.
