Und doch wird sie zutreffend sein, wenn sie auch allerdings keineswegs den Inhalt und die Eigentümlichkeiten des ganz einzig dastehenden Bildes erschöpft. Es soll hier versucht werden genauer auseinanderzusetzen, was uns in diesem vorgeführt wird. Um die Analyse zu erleichtern sind auf den ineinander übergreifenden Teilaufnahmen Taf. IllVI die einzelnen Figuren des Frieses mit Ziffern versehen, mit denen sie im Folgenden bezeichnet werden sollen. -- Zunächst lässt sich ohne Weiteres feststellen, dass der geschilderte Vorgang sich auf einem Schlachtfeld abspielt. Das bezeugen uns sogleich die beiden Toten 7 und 14, die in genau gleicher Stellung, wie mit den Händen vor sich greifend, am Boden lang hingestreckt liegen und durch den Helmbusch als gefallene Krieger gekennzeichnet sind. Der Kampf aber, der sie ums Leben gebracht hat, ist offenbar beendet. Eine ähnliche Situation war auf beiden Seiten eines grossen leider sehr fragmentierten Dipylonkraters im Louvre dargestellt (Abb. I). Es handelt sich dort um Schiffskämpfe, und mit einleuchtendem Becht betitelt Villard die betreffenden Szenen »apres le combat«. Die Toten sind, wohl auf dem Gestade, nebeneinander gelegt, und die überlebenden Krieger stehen paarweise auf den Schiffen in ruhiger Haltung, einige von ihnen auf ihre Lanzen gestützt, wie nach dem Gefecht ausruhend. Auf unserer Kanne ist es anders. Das Geschehen ist hier ein viel bewegteres. Insoweit sie nicht den grossen fast die ganze Person verdeckenden Dipylonschild tragen, gestikulieren die Krieger, die um die Toten herum stehen, lebhaft mit ausgestreckten Armen und gespreizten Fingern. Man betrachte besonders die sehr erregte Figur 11 (Taf. V). Unverkennbar wird eine wichtige Angelegenheit eifrig erörtert. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
