Translation of this Japanese romance by the naval surgeon and Orientals Frederick Victor Dickins. Japan's most famous historical legend recounting the true 18th-century Ako incident of 47 samurai sacrificing their lives to avenge the death of their disgraced feudal lord. With notes and an appendix containing a metrical version of the Ballad of Takasago and a specimen of the original text in the Japanese character. Illustrated with twenty-nine blue and black colored woodblock prints, drawn and executed by Japanese artists, and printed on Japanese paper, containing descriptors in Japanese and captions in English. The plate "The Device of Kudaiu," listed to face page 81, is bound in facing page 112, here with Japanese script only. Binding with light wear along edges, small chips, and joints of spine with some scuffing. Previous owner's signature on front free endpaper. Block lightly age-toned. In 1880 Allen & Co. printed a variant edition with only 24 plates of illustrations.

Internally clean and the woodblock prints are bright. Some creasing along the bottom margin of several pages. All plates are present per the listing of illustrations at the back.
