Add to basketHard Cover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Quarter bound in burnt orange cloth back strip and light tan paper over boards. Pages i-iv + 1-216 plus 10 plates, including the frontispiece with tissue guard, and two fold out maps bound at rear; errata slip bound in at the Contents page. The upper board has the title and a wood engraving of the powder horn in black; the spine has the main title in black. Spine ends softened, a sharp dent affecting the bottom of both boards, some general shelf soling of boards, a small moisture stain on top fore edge of rear board, offsetting of the free endpapers, and endpapers cracked, but not badly. Internally many leaves are unopened along the top edge, though pages 124 to 176 do not suffer this inconvenience, nor do any of the plates. There is no foxing of the pages. One of th fold-out maps has a 4" tear from careless opening. There is an owner name on the front pastedown "Henry Harrisse"; though not verified it would make sense that this would be the American historian who authored books on the discovery of America and geograhic representations of the New World. The book, inspired by the map on the powder horn, dated imperfectly, as being carved in 1759 or 1760, covers the discovery of America, settlement, native races and the fur trade, the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War in North Ameria), and the Treaty of Paris. The author's first of only two published books.…

Contact seller3-star sellerLondon: For the Author by Henry Stephens & Son, 1891. The map engraved on a 14-inch bullock's powder horn provides info about the French and Indian Wars. Specifically, "which were the European nations who claimed the ground shown on the map. how New England and France came into collision in that region. where and how they fought, and with what results. Of course, In order to do this, "it has been necessary to travel considerably out of the field of the map." Fascinating study, and a fresh way of seeing old history. Two folding colored maps show some tape repair at gutter margins, otherwise a very good copy in publisher's decorated cloth over printed boards. 22 x 29 cm. iv, 216 pp. b/w plates and maps, folding hand colored maps . Add to basketWraps. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Large format: 10" x 13". All pages present including the facsimile maps at the rear. While the front, rear, and part of the spine wraps are present, some of the signatures are disbound (namely the front cover, prelimary leaves up to and including page xiv, and all the maps at the rear, either separately or partnered with others}. The covers have minor chips, short tears, edge wrinkles, and some staining; internally, there is an owner's name and date (1948) on the front free endpaper; otherwise the pages are clean, unmarked, and without any foxing. The author (1842-1932) makes a compelling case that the voyage and associated maps published anonymously in 1558 was a complete hoax, and that the voyage to North America by the Zeno brothers never happened.…
