Weltkrieges beteiligte sich Pater Franziskus Maria Stratmann (1883-1971) noch an der theologischen Textproduktion zur Stärkung des Kampfgeistes. Ein Soldat, der im militärischen Gemetzel nichts Segensreiches entdecken kann, schickt… ihm als Antwort einen wütenden Protestbrief. Der Dominikaner wird nachdenklich und kehrt um zur pazifistischen Sicht der frühen Kirche: 'Der Christ steht mehr über als in dem Staate, jedenfalls hängt sein Herz nicht an staatlichem und militärischem Glanz. So dachten sie alle, die von nationaler Beschränktheit noch nicht verkümmerten Christen der ersten Epoche.' Das hier neu edierte Werk 'Weltkirche und Weltfriede' (1924) erweist Stratmann als den zentralen Theoretiker der frühen katholischen Friedensbewegung in Deutschland: 'Mit dem Kampf gegen den Krieg verhält es sich genau wie mit dem Kampf gegen die Sünde, Krankheit und soziale Mißstände: es ist Pflicht, das menschenmögliche Maß von Widerstand gegen sie aufzubieten.' Der Autor zeigt schon in der Weimarer Zeit auf, dass jeder moderne Krieg de facto mit den strengen Kriterien der kirchlichen Lehrtradition nicht vereinbar ist. Seine Bemerkungen über Mahatma Gandhi eröffnen zudem einen neuen Horizont: 'Daß die gewaltlose Methode als solche dem Geiste Christi mehr entspricht als die gewaltsame, kann nicht bestritten werden.' Nach dem 'Menschenschlachthaus 1914-1918' wäre ein Lernprozess der ganzen Kirche möglich gewesen: 'Der Geist des Christentums und der Geist des Krieges vertragen sich wie Feuer und Wasser.'Kirche & Weltkrieg - Band 5.
