Verdere gegevens over het genre of het jaar zijn niet zichtbaar. Inhoudsopgave: Frans Erens (1857-1935) was, om met Kloos te spreken ?een der fijnstontwikkelde en tegelijkertijd een der ruimst-ziende onder de Tachtigers.? Hij heeft onder hen een bescheiden, maar niettemin een wel heel bijzondere positie ingenomen. Een summiere levensschets geeft daartoe al de eerste aanwijzingen: Hij werd geboren in Schaesberg in Zuid-Limburg, bracht zijn kinderjaren door op het boerenbedrijf van zijn ouders en kreeg een katholieke opvoeding. Van 1868 tot 1876 bezocht hij de kostschool Rolduc te Kerkrade, waarna hij rechten gaat studeren in Leiden; deze studie zet hij voort in Bonn en omstreeks 1880 in Parijs, waar hij nauwe betrekkingen aanknoopt met de jonge Franse literatoren. Eind 1883 keert hij terug naar Nederland om in Amsterdam zijn studie te voltooien, sluit zich daar aan bij de Tachtigers en geeft zijn medewerking o.a. aan De Nieuwe Gids. Van 1896 tot 1897 en van 1909 tot 1935 is hij redacteur van dit tijdschrift. Na zijn promotie in 1888 vestigt hij zich enige tijd als advocaat in Amsterdam, bekleedt enkele functies bij de rechterlijke macht in Veghel en Oostburg, maar zegt dat alles in 1901 vaarwel. Om zich geheel aan de studie en letteren te wijden, trekt hij zich terug naar Zuid-Limburg, waar hij met korte onderbrekingen ? Erens reisde veel ? tot aan zijn dood verblijft. Wanneer men de figuur van Erens, zijn verhouding tot de andere Tachtigers en zijn werk wil benaderen, is het vooral van belang aandacht te schenken aan zijn afkomst en zijn drie-jarig verblijf in Parijs. ?Ik ben een plant geteeld ver van Holland, in het Zuiden van Limburg, dicht bij de Duitsche grens?, zo vertelt Frans Erens in zijn memoires Verloopen Jaren. En wat het betekende geboren en grootgebracht te worden in zo?n grensgebied waar verschillende culturen en talen elkaar ontmoeten, vertelt hij ons ook. Het leidde bij hem tot een scherp innerlijk conflict: ?zoo is de man van het grensland gemarteld door de culturen en de talen, die hij omdraagt in zijn wezen.? Limburg (tot 1867 nog lid van de Duitse bond) lag in zijn jeugd nog bijna geheel in de Duitse en vooral Franse invloedssfeer. Behalve het dialect van zijn streek, hoorde hij in zijn kinderjaren het Duits en Frans, de beschaafde omgangstalen.
