The author focuses on Lincoln's formative years in Indiana, where the young man spent 14 years, from the age of 7 to 21. The author argues that this period was crucial in shaping Lincoln's character and ideals, and explores the influences that shaped him, including his family, education, and the political and social climate of the time. The book also examines Lincoln's early career as a lawyer and politician, and his developing views on slavery and the Union.
