Full French mottled calf, spine gilt (joints somewhat splitting, some light edgewear, overall good). Bookseller's ticket of Jean Clavreuil of Paris to pastedown. French teaching method on the plainsong, chanted music for the mass. Several editions preceded this Avignon edition of similar titles, this seemingly the second (previously, Avignon: 1810). The work was also published in Paris, as early as circa 1700. Feillée, French musicologist, lived around 1750. He is known for publishing his work on the "new method" which defends the expressive interpretation of the plainsong with contemporary doctrine affetti (musical scores) even recommending the use of trills and other ornaments. Many new editions appeared over the decade. Apart from works written in this specific style appear are first drafts or methods to learn and to sing the song and plainsong properly. Plainsong, also called plain-chant, is a form of medieval church music that involves chanting; it emerged as early as the first century and is the basis of such famous styles as the Gregorian Chant. Since plain-chant only uses words that are sung there was no notation for earlier forms. The square-shaped symbols featured on these lessons were called "neumes" and were used to indicate pitch and syllable phrasing. Wonderfully full of Latin verse, a good source material for traditional music of the mass.
