Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. (book is worn along top edge as shown; otherwise a tight clean copy) WHEN Françoise Mallet-Joris began her career, in the early Fifties, she seemed to be Belgium's rather heated answer to Françoise Sagan. "The Illusionist" and "The Red Room" announced that she was just as good at being darkly precocious and could wield as erotic a typewriter. But in "The House of Lies," published in 1957, she shifted from the torrid and subjective to a broader focus. There she saw not only the desirous individual but also the merciless society in which he writhes like a fly in mucilage. "The House of Lies," then, probed a much more original vein. Now, in the present novel awarded the Prix Fémina and superbly, if very Britishly translated by Herma Briffault Mme. Mallet-Joris comes into her own. Society itself is her villainous hero here, society dramatized and dissected with a peculiar surgical sensuousness, which may well develop into a major trademark in European fiction. The author's social universe is the Rue d'Odessa, a frayed, vulgar nook in Montparnasse. It steams out of these pages with an enveloping vividness of color, noise and smell; it reminds us that other Europeans than the French have a flair for the zestful cataloguing of the petit-bourgeois milieu. The pastel counters of the Prisunic (the Parisian five-and-ten) glow here under fluorescent light with the same detailed vitality as the gin-mill did under gas lamps in Zola's "The Dram Shop." The third-rate peepshow of the Brasserie Dorée shimmies and chirps with magnetic flamboyance. And even the Café Céleste that overmortgaged hole-in-the-wall compels our eye, ear and nose as we watch the flies creep down the Cocoa sign, sniff the Amer-Picon that Socrates, the owner, is pouring out, and listen to his uneasy impersonation of the affluent innkeeper.
