Es schien überdies, als sei die Zahl erhaltener persischer Originaldokumente - nicht zuletzt aufgrund des fast völligen Fehlens öffentlicher Archive in Iran, deren Bestände über die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückreichen - überaus beschränkt. Erst während der letzten drei Jahrzehnte fand die persische Diplomatik seitens der Erforscher der spätmittelalterlichen und neueren Geschichte Irans stärkere Zuwendung. Dabei stellte sich heraus, daß vor allem in persischen Privatsammlungen, aber auch in internationalen Archiven wesentlich mehr Dokumente erhalten waren, als ehedem angenommen worden war - wenn auch sehr disparat. Dieser Aufschwung des Interesses an der persischen Diplomatik in der jüngsten Zeit hatte - zunächst in erster Linie aufseiten orientalistischer Wissenschaftler außerhalb Irans - das Entstehen einiger grundlegender Untersuchungen zum iranischen Kanzleiwesen zur Folge; darüber hinaus stimulierte es auch die Veröffentlichung einer stattlichen Anzahl persischer Dokumente, wofür insbesondere den Fachhistorikern in Persien zu danken ist.
