Hardcover. Condition: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. As a world record holder in ballooning, speed sailing, and aviation, Steve Fossett was the pinnacle of extreme sporting achievements. His adventurous spirit continually inspired his fellow competitors and sports aficionados, and attracted the curiosity of the world. In 2005, Fossett made the first solo, non-stop, non-refueled circumnavigation of the world at the helm of what has been described as "a fuel tank with room for one"--the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer. But what made someone like Steve give up a secure, well-paid job in the financial sector for the romantic, yet increasingly dangerous, world of the adventurer? He achieved the first balloon crossings of Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America; the first ocean crossings of the South Atlantic, South Pacific, and Indian Oceans; and the first solo balloon flight round the world--a milestone in aviation history. And he didn't just take on the air. The most-successful speed sailor in the history of sailing, he also completed premier endurance sports events, including the Iditarod and Ironman Triathlon. In this dynamic autobiography, Steve Fossett shared his inspirational stories and candidly recounted the milestones, challenges, and victories that made up his much-heralded career and paved the path to his numerous world records.

Hardcover. Glued binding. Paper over boards. xxi, [1], 265, [1] p. Illustrations (some in color). Records. Index. In 2005, Steve Fossett completed the first solo, non-stop, non-refuelled circumnavigation of the world at the helm of the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer. But what makes someone like Steve give up a secure, wellpaid job for the romantic, yet dangerous, world of the adventurer? His adventurous spirit has piqued the intrigue of his fellow competitors and sports aficionados, and attracted the notice of the world. In this dynamic autobiography, Steve Fossett shares his inspirational stories in a personal, intimate voice and candidly recounts the milestones, challenges and victories that have made up his much-heralded career and paved the way to his 109 world records. From Wikipedia: "James Stephen "Steve" Fossett (April 22, 1944 c. September 3, 2007) was an American businessman, and a record-setting aviator, sailor, and adventurer. He was the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon. He made his fortune in the financial services industry, and was best known for many world records, including five nonstop circumnavigations of the Earth: as a long-distance solo balloonist, as a sailor, and as a solo flight fixed-wing aircraft pilot. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Explorers Club, Fossett set 116 records in five different sports, 60 of which still stood when he disappeared. On September 3, 2007, Fossett was reported missing after the plane he was flying over the Great Basin Desert in Nevada failed to return. Despite a month of searches by the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and others, Fossett could not be found and the search by CAP was called off on October 2, 2007. Privately funded and privately directed search efforts continued, however, but after a request from Fossett's wife, he was declared legally dead on February 15, 2008. On September 29, 2008, a hiker found Fossett's identification cards in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, and the crash site was discovered on October 1, 2008, 65 miles (100 km) due south from Flying-M Ranch where he took off, and 5.3 miles (8.5 km) due west (282 degrees) of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area's base operations, although his remains were not initially found. On November 3, 2008, tests conducted on two bones recovered about one-half mile (0.8 km) from the site of the crash produced a match to Fossett's DNA." Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Presumed first U.K. edition/first printing.
