Born on March 13, 1925, in Eastnor, Herefordshire, she served in the Women's Royal Naval Service during World War II before studying photography at Guildford School of Art from 1946 to 1950.In 1949, Bown began her prolific career with The Observer newspaper, capturing candid images of prominent figures such as Bertrand Russell, Samuel Beckett, Queen Elizabeth II, and The Beatles. Her minimalist approach utilized natural light and a simple camera setup, allowing her to seize spontaneous moments that revealed the essence of her subjects. Throughout her career, Bown received numerous accolades, including being appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1985 and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1995. Her work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions like the National Portrait Gallery in London and is held in various permanent collections. Jane Bown's legacy endures through her timeless portraits, which continue to influence and inspire the field of photography. She passed away on December 21, 2014, at the age of 89.

First Edition and First Printing of The Fifties Chronicle. Large, hefty quarto, illustrated jacket, boards illustrated identically to the jacket except for the metallic nature of the large title letters, 480 pp. As New book in a very, very near fine jacket with a couple of micro edge nicks and a small price sticker on the back panel lower right. See scans. Something well in excess of 1,000 color and black and white photos and other graphics are the glitz of this appealing historical display, but a thoughtful foreword by Margaret Truman (yes, daughter of President Harry), who came of age during the fifties, followed by scholarly text contributions from writers Bailey, Farber et al describing those myriad graphic wonders are all just as necessary and precious. An as-new first edition, first printing book in a nearly perfect jacket. See scans. LG8.

They were just what she needed for her own garden, and she asked her host what they were. "Those are Nellie Stevens hollies," was the reply. She looked again and couldn't help but wonder about the name. Who in the world is Nellie Stevens, and how did her name ever become associated with this plant? She noted other intriguing names, and she asked similar questions. She saw a beautifulblue clematis and wondered if Betty Corning was still alive and what stories she had to tell. She wondered about the places and people whose names are associated with so many popular garden plants. She is not alone. If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the mother of research. In many cases, we wonder not what our gardens grow, but who our gardens grow. Until now, these accounts have not been compiled and unfortunately, many of the people are disappearing, their stories with them. Now gardeners can enjoy the beauty of their plants and delight in the tales they tell." ; Contents: Anna, Illinois -- Arnold Arboretum -- Janes Bath -- Lole Benedict -- ray Bracken -- Luther Burbank -- Molly Bush -- Cedar lane Farm -- John Champneys, Phillippe Noisette -- Corbett, maryland -- Betty Corning -- John Creech -- Roy Davidson -- Vince and Barbara Dooley -- Eco-Gardens -- Katie Ferguson -- Henry and Sally Fuller -- Fred Galle -- Gardenview Horticultural park -- Azilda Gerbing -- Goodness Grows -- Kim Hawks -- mary Gibson Henry -- Poly Hill -- Andre Iseli -- Tina James -- Joseph Kassab -- Hella Lacy -- Michael Lindsey -- Carol Mackie -- Frank N Meyer -- Montrose Nursery -- David Mooberry -- Mt.
