A Confederacy of Dunces is a picaresque novel by American novelist John Kennedy Toole which reached publication in 1980, eleven years after Toole's suicide. Published through the efforts of writer Walker Percy (who also contributed a foreword) and Toole's mother, Thelma, the book became first a cult classic, then a mainstream success; it earned Toole a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981, and is now considered a canonical work of modern literature of the Southern United States.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: dj. Third Printing. Very attractive early printing of this tragicomic novel that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1981. Sadly, Toole committed suicide 12 years prior due, at least in part, to repeated rejections of the book by mainstream publishers. His mother persisted with efforts to get it published following Toole's death, ultimately getting help from Walker Percy and the Louisiana State University Press. The novel is the hilariously absurd tale of Ignatius J. Reilly, a pompous yet hapless misfit, blundering through the chaotic streets of 1960s New Orleans. With biting satire and unforgettable characters, A Confederacy of Dunces brilliantly skewers societal dysfunction, human folly, and the clash between intellect and reality. Clipped old magazine article on the book and its publication is laid in. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Front and rear pastedowns each have a small patch of browning, a bit of toning from laid in article to front free endpaper and subsequent leaf, else fine. Jacket has minor extremity rubs. Very handsome copy. Cloth hardcover. Octavo. xii, 338 pages.
