Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Children's Fairy Geography(or, Merry Trip Round Europe) by Forbes E. Winslow was published by G. W. Dillingham, New York, in 1890. Not an ex-library copy, this 124-year-old, 316-page, 7" X 9", possible 1st U.S. edition offering is in G condition. Fairly noticeable shelf wear is observed at top and bottom edges of spine as well as at the four outer tips of this volume's ORIGINAL COVER BOARDS. There is some modest yellowing of text's pages, and , near the tops of every other page, from the main Title Page through page 9, and always in pencil, are written words, sometimes just a single word, sometimes two words, and sometimes three(this was, in actuality after all, some child's schoolbook, at one time). From Preface, ".In this book.I am going to make an.attempt to add to the pleasure and happiness of our young people. .I must say that the textbooks which we had to study contrived to convey their information in the driest possible way. .Times are altered now, common sense has come to the fore, [and] our schoolbooks are full of life, animation, and interest, and the work of instruction goes on merrily enough. .This book.is an attempt to make the study of geography interesting as well as instructive." In fact, Reader, this offering is nothing less than a 5th or 6th-grade geography/social studies/history of Europe disguised as a magical, make-believe excursion taken by the author, accompanied by his son, Jack, and his daughter, Ethel, complete with fantastic modes of transport such as "electric boots" and a "wishing carpet". Presented in some 23 chapters, the countries "visited"/detailed include England, of course, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Holland, The German Empire, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Greece, Turkey in Europe, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and The Arctic Seas. OF SPECIAL MENTION: To wonderfully complement the quite detailed text are nearly 120 finely rendered Line Drawings(not to mention the additional, period Chapter Decorations) by an assortment of artists. Also included are Contents Pages and a List of Illustrations. I don't know if I've ever referred to a geography textbook as "charming", but this offering was, in its own way, as delightful as a book covering this subject could be. Thank you very much!.…
