Bereits im Jahr 1248 wurde der Grundstein gelegt…. Den letzten Schliff erhielt das Gebäude 1880 nach den Originalplänen aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Aufgrund seiner imposanten Größe steht der Kölner Dom für Extravaganz und Einzigartigkeit. Bereits im 17. Jahrhundert, als der Dom noch nicht fertig war, verewigten Künstler wie Jan van der Heyden und Lambert Doomer die Kathedrale in ihren Bildern. Allein der Torso des unfertigen Doms beeindruckte durch seine unvergleichliche Baukunst. Charakteristisch ist der bis 1868 auf dem Südturm der Kathedrale stehende Baukran. Etwa 500 Jahre lang 'zierte' dieser den unvollendeten Dom und wurde somit in die Werke der Künstler übernommen. Faszination Gotteshaus - Motiv verschiedener Kunstepochen Das Motiv der Kathedrale findet sich in unzähligen Gemälden bedeutender Künstler. Auch der Münchner Architekturmaler Domenico Quaglio war von Kirchen fasziniert. Er verewigte die Kathedrale Notre-Dame in Reims zwischen 1826 und 1833 in drei seiner Bilder. Besonders im letzten Werk präsentiert er die Kirche wie auf einer Bühne im Scheinwerferlicht: Die Kirche erstrahlt in hellen Farben, filigrane Linien bringen zahlreiche architektonische Details zur Geltung. Lange Zeit fanden in der Kathedrale die Krönungen französischer Könige statt. Dies war für Quaglio nicht von Bedeutung. Sein Anliegen war es, das Gebäude als prachtvolles Bauwerk der Gotik emporzuheben. Häufig lassen die Werke Rückschlüsse auf die religiöse oder politische Einstellung der Maler zu. Die deutsche Besatzung in Frankreich von 1940 bis 1944 war ein einschneidendes Ereignis für viele Menschen. Dieses spiegelt sich in Pablo Picassos Gemälde der Kathedrale Notre-Dame in Paris aus dem Jahr 1945 wider. Die kalten Farben seiner kubistischen Formen und die triste Atmosphäre reflektieren das Leid der französischen Hauptstadt. Der Band 'Die Kathedrale': Architektur trifft auf Malerei Der Hirmer Verlag veranschaulicht eindrucksvoll in seinem Katalog 'Die Kathedrale' die Wiederentdeckung der gotischen Baukunst des Mittelalters. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts galt die Gotik in Frankreich vorübergehend als unzeitgemäß und gar geschmacklos. Etwa 150 Jahre später begeisterte sie über Europa hinaus sogar Künstler der Vereinigten Staaten wie Lyonel Feininger und später Roy Lichtenstein. Auf 280 Seiten präsentiert der Band 150 Meisterwerke von Caspar David Friedrich über Claude Monet bis hin zu Andy Warhol. Geprägt von den jeweiligen politischen und historischen Ereignissen zeigt er die verschiedenen Darstellungen deutscher und französischer Kathedralen auf. Großformatige Abbildungen geben Einblick in mehr als 200 Jahre Kunstgeschichte und veranschaulichen den fortlaufenden architektonischen Wandel der Gotteshäuser. Je nach Epoche, zum Beispiel Romantik, Expressionismus und Gegenwartskunst, gliedert sich der Katalog in einzelne Abschnitte. Dem Kölner Dom wurde dabei ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet. Jedes Werk ist mit wichtigen Informationen zu seiner Entstehung, dem jeweiligen Künstler und dessen Absichten versehen.
