The preface notes that many of these myths and legends were shared reluctantly, as some tribal members felt they should not be shared with outsiders, making this a preservation document of genuine ethnographic significance. The central narrative follows Nay-Thah-Way-Nah, a young Shawnee boy whose father was a grandson of the great Shawnee chief Se-leeka and whose ancestors fought alongside Tecumseh in the War of 1812. The stories document Shawnee customs, relationship with nature, tribal religion, and the collision of Native life with the encroaching Federal government ? told from an intimate, personal perspective that distinguishes this from more detached academic accounts. ????????????????????????????????????
