First separate edition, reprinted, for private distribution, from the Transactions of the American Medical Association, 1852. Significant chipping to the cloth at the spine, but underlying structure sound; some light marginal dampstaining. The base of the stethoscope has repairs to cracks, but is otherwise in excellent (operable) condition. Presentation copy, inscribed for a doctor (but not signed) "with the Author's respects, Buffalo, April 16, 53." This book is accompanied by a 19th c. stethoscope and an old note on an Rx pad, "stethoscope used prior to 1855." The monaural ear trumpet is metal riveted to Vulcanite (?).
