John Arnold Fleming (1871-1966) was a Scottish industrial chemist closely associated with the British pottery industry. He was also a noted journalist, author, politician, and philanthropist. In this book, he explores the romance of Scottish glass and its history, throwing light on the domestic life of Scotland as well as the Jacobite period. He gives commentaries on dominant styles and decoration, stained and leaded glass and windows, as well as a walk-through of the various technicalities of manufacture. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold illustration of a lion rampant on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped with some damage to the cloth and a little loss at the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with the following inscription from the author on the front free endpaper: "From the author to my expert illustrator, Arnold Fleming - 1938". The illustrator referred to is Kenneth Leslie Graham (1900-1979). His name in the Preface has been underlined and chapter 5 - What Takes Place in the Glasshouse - has been underlined in the list of contents. A few of the plates showing his illustrations have blue 'tick' marks on the top corner and red lines have been drawn down the fore margin of the pages of chapter 5. The front fixed endpaper has a label from The Royal Society of Arts Library indicating that the book was presented by Mrs. Kenneth Graham, and there is a 'withdrawn' stamp on the label.
