Published by Chez Olivier de Varennes and Louis Bolssevin, 1658
Seller: Marc J. Bartolucci, Hudson, MA, U.S.A.
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Paris: Chez Olivier de Varennes and Louis Bolssevin, 1658 [1648]. 8vo, 102 p., original full calf with five raised spine bands with board edges stamped in gilt, and with date of 1653 to half title. First thus edition, and third overall, of this scarce work, a collection of mottoes and emblems of love, featuring 50 illustrations by Flemish engraver Albert Flamen. The body of the work has often been attributed to Flamen though he denied authorship of the title. Though Flamen is believed to be of Flemish descent, he lived most of his life in Paris, where he completed the majority of his work. His patrons included Guillaume Tronson, advisor to the King, Gilles Foucquet, son of Nicolas Fouquet, and other prominent French figures associated with the Royalist cause. All of Flamen's works, many of which were issued as small oblong quartos featuring 12 plates each, often depicting landscapes and detailed studies of fish and animals, are rare. This copy features the armorial bookplate of Aimard-Jean de Nicolay (1709-1785) Marquis de Goussainville Seigneur d'Osny Paris on the fpep. Faint spotting internally, spine tips chipped, with minor loss; lower corners chipped; small dents to board edges, but a clean sound copy of a rare title, with one copy of this edition in OCLC (Bibliotheque Sainte Genevieve).
Published by Paris [presumably], 1660
