Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. No signatures. Dust-jacket protected in mylar cover.; 1969 facsimile reprint of the 1846 London first edition. Black boards with gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 202 x 128mm. "This book, tenth in the Hocken Library series of reprints, is a true facsimile of the original edition of 1846. Dr T. M. Hocken in his 'Bibliography of the Literature relating to New Zealand' notes the original as a work of great rarity, stating that only sixty copies were issued. Captain Robert Fitzroy, 1805-1865, first came to notice for the excellence of his hydrographic work when in command of H. M. S. Beagle during the 'thirties, accompanied by the naturalist Charles Darwin. During 1835 Fitzroy had briefly visited the Bay of Islands concerning which, in 1838, he gave evidence favourable to the missionaries before a Select Committee of the House of Lords. In December 1843 he assumed office as second Governor of New Zealand, commencing and administration bedevilled by lack of finance and inadequate military resources, an administration that began amidst the racial strife of the Wairau Massacre and ended with the rebellion of Heke in the North. Unashamedly philo-Maori, Fitzroy sought a policy of conciliation that by his own lights was both politic and just, a policy systematically villified by the New Zealand Company and its colonists, and uncomprehended by the Colonial Office half a world distant. The present work is at once an apologia for his governorship and an indictment of the organised settlement of New Zealand. Recalled in 1845 for failing to observe his Instructions, Fitzroy was later to record a career of distinct as a meteorologist, establishing the first weather forecasting service in Great Britain. Elected to the Royal Society in 1851, he rose eventually to the rank of Vice-Admiral, before taking his own life in 1865." - from dust-jacket blurb.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of weather forecasting, providing a practical guide to understanding and predicting atmospheric changes. Written in the mid-19th century, it captures a time when the science of meteorology was rapidly evolving. The author skillfully combines scientific principles with practical observations, offering readers the tools to become "weather-wise" themselves. The book explores a range of topics, from the use of essential instruments like barometers and thermometers to the interpretation of natural signs, such as cloud formations and animal behavior. It also touches upon the influence of wind direction, temperature, and humidity on weather patterns. The author challenges prevailing beliefs about lunar influence on weather, advocating for the primacy of solar heat and electrical activity as drivers of atmospheric change. The book's most significant contribution lies in its emphasis on the importance of observing and interpreting weather patterns, rather than relying solely on instruments. It encourages readers to become active participants in understanding their environment and to use their observations to predict upcoming changes. By promoting this hands-on approach, the book not only enhances understanding of weather but also encourages a deeper connection with the natural world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
