Architecturalement, Shokokuji est un ensemble de plusieurs temples avec chacun ses jardins, son bosquet de bambou Au centre de cet ensemble se dresse la haute salle de conférence à double pignon. Le Kinkakuji (le temple du Pavillon d or) est certainement l un des temples les plus célèbre du Japon. Après son abdication, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu fit construire sur une colline au nord de Kyoto, une luxueuse villa : Kinkaku. A sa mort en 1408, elle fut transformée en un temple bouddhiste. En 1950, le Pavillon d or fut totalement détruit par un incendie. Il fut reconstruit à l identique en 1955. Il tire son nom de ses deuxième et troisième étages, dorés à la feuille d or. Lui aussi appartient à la secte Rinzai. Le Ginkakuji (le temple du Pavillon d argent) fut construit par le shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa en 1473 pour lui permettre d échapper à la guerre civile. Retiré dans sa villa d Higashiyama, au nord de Kyoto, alors à feu et à sang, il se consacre au développement des arts jusqu à la fin de sa vie. Le Ginkaku devient ensuite un temple bouddhiste zen : Jishoji. Construit en s inspirant du Kinkakuji, il n est pas en argent mais en bois laqué Rinzai est l une des principales branches du zen au Japon. Cette secte, introduite au Japon au XIIe siècle, devint populaire parmi les samouraïs et les nobles et prospéra grâce au soutien du Shogunat de Kamakura. Rinzai utilise la méditation assise ainsi que des kôan (énigmes au-delà de toute solution logique), sur lesquelles il faut méditer et qui ont pour but de développer une compréhension intuitive. Cette école est particulièrement associée à la cérémonie du thé japonais. Le thé, un léger stimulant, avait comme but de maintenir la vigilance des moines zen pendant la méditation.
