Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition Later Printing. The author of the beloved girls' "Hitty" books here offers a selection of 21 favorite children's stories drawn from a wide swath of American folk culture, including native American Indian tales, "Negro" animal tales (Uncle Remus), legendary lumberjack stories (Paul Bunyan), & tales from the Louisiana bijou, southern mountain stories, & New England. In 302 pages, with 70 illustrations throughout by Margaret Freeman, who also did the DJ design. First published in 1929, this is a 1968 printing. Hardcover has deep green cloth-covered boards embossed with a black archer design & lettering to front & spine. Though it is an Ex-Lib copy, with the usual stamps & markings, tape residue to endpapers, condition is VG: very clean & bright, binding strong & straight, front hinge starting, pages creamy white with very mild tanning to edges. Boards show slight rubbing to extremities, bumping to both corners & ends of spine, light surface soiling. The unclipped DJ is Near Fine, having been protected under old library mylar, which has been carefully removed & replaced with clear mylar cover. Just a tad of rubbing & old paper call number to spine are only flaws. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. Freeman, Margaret (illustrator). …

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. As new condition green linen boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Introduction by Carol-Lynn Rossel Waugh; About the Authors and About the Editors. All Ages. "Christmastime and the Newbery Medal seem an almost irresistible combination. For what better time than Christmas, that most family oriented of holidays, to read stories written by authors honored as winners of the John Newbery Medal for their contributions to literature for children? This collection comprises stories by authors today's children know and love, from E.L. Konigsburg and Nancy Willard to Beverly Cleary. It also contains stories by writers familiar to their parents and, perhaps, to their grandparents, from Ruth Sawyer and Rachel Field to Lois Lenski, Eleanor Estes, and Madeleine L'Engle. Some of these stories are humorous. Children will laugh at the antics of Ramona Quimby in "Ramona, the Sheep Suit, and the Three Wise Persons" and at Eliot Miles's Christmas wish in E.L. Konigsburg's "Eliot Miles Does Not Wish You a Merry Christmas Because." Others of the collection recall the Christmases of years past, as in "Once in the Year" by Elizabeth Yates and "The Hundred Dresses" by Eleanor Estes. And others, like Madeleine L'Engle's "A Full House," remind us again of the true meaning of Christmas. This is a collection to savor and to read aloud. It's a book that can be read by the fire, on the beach, in the car on the way to Grandmother's house, or on any available lap. Most of all, it's a book for sharing and for celebrating the joys of Christmas." - from the inner front jacket flap. Firle, Walter (jacket painting) (illustrator). …
