Poquet, illustrateur dont le nom n'a pu être retrouvé dans les principaux répertoires d'artistes. L…'ouvrage annoncé sur la page de titre calligraphiée, Vues et types du Sénégal, ne semble jamais avoir été publié ; ces aquarelles en constituent très vraisemblablement la maquette, ou le modèle préparatoire, destiné à son illustration. L'ensemble comprend un feuillet de titre, portant au verso la table des planches, suivi de treize feuillets sur lesquels sont contrecollées les dix-sept aquarelles, à raison d'une ou deux par page, aux formats de 9,5 × 21 cm ou 16 × 9 cm. Treize seulement sont accompagnées d'une légende manuscrite : Dagana, Richard-Toll, Fort de Bakel, Princesse Mauresse et Maure Orfèvre des Trarzas, Type et coiffure de Malinkés, Homme et Femme Bambara, Femme Peule et Femme Mandingue, Jeune Maure Darmenkour et Femme Wolof portant son enfant, Palmier ronier, Deuxième barrage au-dessus du Félou, Montagnes de Maka Gnian, Vue de Koundian et Poste de Dabou. De Dagana jusqu'à Koundian, dans le Haut-Sénégal, aujourd'hui au Mali, elles composent un remarquable panorama des paysages, des populations et des établissements qui jalonnaient alors la vallée du fleuve Sénégal. In-4 (31 × 20,5 cm), relié en demi-chagrin rouge à coins, dos à cinq nerfs orné de filets dorés, plats de papier marbré, reliure moderne ; une déchirure restaurée en marge droite de la dernière aquarelle. Sur la page de titre, le nom du premier propriétaire, Bérenger-Féraud, a été biffé au crayon. Il s'agit de Laurent Jean Baptiste Bérenger-Féraud (1832-1900), médecin de marine et ethnologue, nommé à la tête du service de santé du Sénégal en 1872 avant de rejoindre Toulon comme médecin-chef, puis de prendre la direction du service de santé de la Martinique en 1875. Auteur d'une importante uvre consacrée aux maladies tropicales, il publia également plusieurs études sur l'Afrique occidentale, notamment Les peuplades de la Sénégambie (Paris, Ernest Leroux, 1879), dans lequel il étudie, entre autres, les Wolofs. La présence de son nom sur la page de titre, ainsi que la date de 1873, contemporaine de son retour en métropole, laissent penser que cet ensemble a pu lui appartenir, peut-être conservé comme souvenir de son séjour sénégalais, sans qu'aucun élément ne permette toutefois de l'établir avec certitude. Ensemble unique, très probablement issu de la bibliothèque de Bérenger-Féraud, offrant un rare témoignage iconographique sur la vallée du Sénégal au début de la Troisième République. À la valeur documentaire de ces aquarelles s'ajoute l'intérêt d'un projet éditorial demeuré inédit, dont ne subsiste aujourd'hui, semble-t-il, que cette maquette. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Unpublished manuscript comprising 17 original signed and captioned watercolours executed in 1873 by a certain A. Poquet, an illustrator whose name has not been traced in the principal artists' dictionaries. The work announced on the calligraphic title page, Vues et types du Sénégal (Views and Types of Senegal), appears never to have been published; these watercolours almost certainly constitute the original maquette, or preparatory artwork, intended for its illustration. The volume comprises a calligraphic title leaf, with a table of plates on the verso, followed by thirteen leaves on which the seventeen watercolours are mounted, one or two to a page, measuring either 9.5 × 21 cm or 16 × 9 cm.
