Folha de rosto com texto emoldurado em esquadria decorada com motivos vegetalistas e com escudo de armas de Portugal. Obra ilustrada com assinaturas fac-similadas (numeradas de 1 a 115) que antecedem a identificação dos signatários e os respectivos apontamentos biográficos. As páginas com os fac-símiles dos documentos 33 e 43 a 49 têm dimensões (altura) diferentes das restantes páginas. Exemplar com ex-libris colado no verso da pasta anterior da biblioteca do Dr. Mário Carmona, famoso médico, bibliófilo e autor da obra O Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos . Lisboa 1954. A página 3 contém a ordem de impressão emitida pelo Secretário do Governo Geral, António Valente do Couto datada de 11 de Julho de 1853. Seguindo-se a Advertência (págs. 5 e 6) e o Indice Chronologico (págs. 7 a 9), o Resumo e Erratas (pág. 10). Nas últimas três páginas encontra-se o Indice Alfabetico dos signatários, ordenado por primeiro nome. Obra muito rara como todas as impressas em Goa, de tal maneira, que já Inocêncio a referia como muito rara: «Estas colecções são muito raras na Índia, e ainda mais em Lisboa». É muito importante para o estudo das biografias dos governadores e Vice-Reis, da Índia Portuguesa e da documentação por eles produzida. Como o autor afirma esta «Colecção de fac-similes das Assignaturas.» era para fazer parte da obra: ?Serie Chronologica das assinaturas dos V. Reis e Governadores Gerais do Estado da Índia?, Goa 1852, começada a publicar antes desta, mas que ficou muito incompleta apenas com algumas dezenas de páginas impressas. Posteriormente Nery Xavier publicou, onze anos depois, em 1863, uma obra idêntica com as assinaturas dos Arcebispos Primazes de Goa, alguns dos quais exerceram funções de governo do Estado da Índia. A presente obra contém notas biográficas de todos os Vice-Reis e governadores desde 1505 até 1851, assim como dos vogais do Conselho do Governo Geral dos Estado da Índia, que asseguravam a administração nos períodos em que não estavam em funções um vice-rei ou um governador. Em cada folha com as biografias o autor recolheu as assinaturas dos vice-reis, governadores e vogais, sendo que no caso dos dois primeiros são apresentadas duas e três versões das respectivas assinaturas. Todas foram recolhidas dos Livros das posses, dos Assentos dos Conselhos de Estado, do Conselho da Fazenda e de documentos diversos como Cartas, Patentes, Alvarás e Provisões. Não inclui as assinaturas dos Vice-Reis e governadores desde 1505 a 1590, pois não existiam no Arquivo de Goa, mas existem na Torre do Tombo de Lisboa e cada folha apresenta o respectivo espaço para as assinaturas serem acrescentadas. Os governantes do Estado da Índia, função que era exercida por nobres que recebiam o título de Governadores, de Vice-Reis ou que era exercida por uma entidade colectiva como o Conselho do Governo Geral, administravam um vasto espaço geográfico desde o Cabo da Boa Esperança, na ponta sul de África até ao Japão e Timor, com poder para fazer a guerra, estabelecer relações diplomáticas, cobrar impostos, nomear os membros da administração. Até ao início do século XVII, data da chegada dos holandeses, o governador da Índia dominava todo o comércio e navegação no mar Índico, com recurso a um conjunto de mais de meia centena de fortalezas e a várias esquadras de guerra. A partir de 1502, os navios que quisessem navegar e comerciar em todo o mar Índico tinham que pagar um tributo - O Cartaz, assim designado porque os navios tinham que possuir um salvo conduto e um sinal visível provando que tinham pago. O direito do monopólio da navegação e comércio no Atlântico Sul [Mare Clausum], que depois se estendeu ao Índico, foi concedido aos portugueses no tempo do Infante D. Henrique pelos papas romanos, conforme as bulas Dum diversas, de 1452 e Romanus Pontifex, de 1455. Filipe Nery Xavier (São Salvador, Loutolim, Salcete, Goa, Índia Portuguesa 1801 - Salcete, Goa, 1875) Funcionário público, escritor, historiador e membro da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa. Foi funcionário da Secretaria do Governo exercendo as funções de oficial supranumerário desde 30 de Janeiro de 1824, e depois promovido a Oficial do número em 21 de Janeiro de 1838; Chefe da primeira secção a 27 de Agosto de 1840; e Oficial maior graduado por decreto de 2 de Abril de 1852. Foi nomeado Director da Imprensa Nacional do Goa por portaria de l de Maio de 1851. Foi condecorado com o hábito de N. S. da Conceição de Vila-Viçosa por decreto de 12 de Maio de 1854 e por serviços prestados na qualidade de Membro da Comissão encarregada no Estado da Índia de coligir productos para a Exposição Universal de Paris em 1867 foi agraciado com a Ordem de Cristo.
