"Nach dem Medizinstudium promovierte Fal…ck 1843 in Marburg, habilitierte sich dort 1845 für Arzneimittellehre, wurde 1856 außerordentlicher, 1863 ordentlicher Professor. Er praktizierte als Arzt und hat seine Heimatstadt nur für kurze Konsultations- und Tagungsreisen verlassen. Unter dem Einfluß seines klinischen Lehrers C. Heusinger sind Falcks erste Arbeiten der geographischen Pathologie gewidmet: dem Kropf in Kurhessen und Nassau (Dissertation), seiner Ätiologie im Zusammenhang mit den Bodenformationen. F.s ausgedehnte vergleichend-anatomischen Untersuchungen (1854-57) sollten den Anfang einer umfassenden Zoostatistik bilden. Mit jahrelang durchgeführten Experimenten an Tieren und Menschen, vor allem an sich selbst, suchte er die Frage nach dem Wasserstoffwechsel zu lösen. Durch ganze Serien von Versuchen spürte er der Harnstoffbildung und -ausscheidung im Organismus nach. Diese Arbeiten sollten helfen, eine Pharmakologie auf physiologisch-chemischer Basis zu schaffen, wie sie F. und seinen Zeitgenossen vorschwebte. Viele Bausteine dazu lieferte er in Zeitschriftenaufsätzen, in Dissertationen seiner Schüler und in seinem "Handbuch der diätetischen Heilmittellehre" (1850), dem ersten Teil eines nie vollendeten Werkes über die gesamte Arzneimittellehre, und dem "Handbuch der wissenschaftlichen und praktischen Fleischkunde" (1880). Nach langem Kampfe erreichte F. 1867 die Gründung eines pharmakologischen Institutes in Marburg nach dem Vorbild des von Rudolf Buchheim in Dorpat geschaffenen. Trotzdem fühlte sich F. noch nicht als Nur-Pharmakologe, wie die mit seinem Sohne Ferdinand August 1875 begründete Zeitschrift "Beiträge zur Physiologie, Hygiene, Pharmakologie und Toxikologie" zeigte."
