Two folded large handouts, one illustrated in black and white, the other black and white and blue ink, 45.7 x 60.5cm, captions in Japanese and English. Paper age toned with some closed tears and minor holes neatly repaired with washi on the verso. Two fascinating fold-out handouts produced by the Ueno Panorama Hall, a popular Meiji Era Tokyo entertainment space opened in 1890. The 1890s to the early years of the twentieth century were the heyday of the panorama as a public spectacle. An early form of virtual reality, 19th century panoramas were huge images painted on the walls of a circular room to give the viewer (who stood in the middle of the room) the sense of being present at a dramatic event. Both exhibitions engaged well-known artists to draw the illustrations. The Boxer Rebellion exhibition engaged Nomura Yoshimitsu (????) and the Yellow Sea Battle exhibition commissioned T?j? Sentar? (?????). These souvenir publications feature circular drawings of two panoramas shown at the Ueno Panorama Hall: an 1898 panorama depicting the 1894 Battle of the Yellow Sea during the Sino-Japanese War, and another depicting scenes from the Boxer Rebellion and the allied occupation of Beijing following the 1900 siege of the foreign legations. Both have texts in (slightly shaky) English as well as in Japanese, and both provide explanations of the various scenes and events depicted in the panoramas. The Battle of the Yellow Sea panorama (reproduced in blue, black and white) features dynamic scenes of exploding and sinking ships, while the Boxer Rebellion panorama (reproduced in black and white) shows battle scenes unfolding in the intricately reconstructed cityscapes of Beijing. The pamphlet front cover features military flags of Japan, the US and other Allied nations. The pamphlets provide a vivid example the role of panoramas as vehicles for popularising nationalist sentiments. They use dramatic images of victory over China to illustrate Japan's growing military might. The text accompanying the panorama of the Battle of the Yellow Sea ends with the words "thus the Japanese squadrons gained the most honourable victory, before in the presence of World-powers [sic]". By the time the Boxer Rebellion panorama was shown, though, the panorama hall was losing appeal as moving pictures emerged and Japan acquired its first cinemas.
