Er war 1848 als Abgeordneter in die deutsche Reichsversammlung gewählt worden, konnte jedoch den Erwartungen, die man in ihn gesetzt hatte, nicht entsprechen. "Seine Anschauungen waren veraltet, er… verstand die Zeit nicht mehr. Aus der Zeit der Septemberunruhen in Frankfurt rührt seine ,Schwanenrede' her, die nie gesprochen, sondern nur gedruckt worden ist. In derselben gibt er sein politisches Glaubensbekenntniß, welches er mit den Worten schließt: 'Deutschlands Einheit war der Traum meines erwachenden Lebens, das Morgenroth meiner Jugend, der Sonnenschein der Manneskraft und ist jetzt der Abendstern, der mir zur ewigen Ruhe winkt'." Unter der napoleonischen Fremdherrschaft hatte er sich dann als Beitrag zur nationalen Erneuerung vor allem dem Aufbau der Turnbewegung gewidmet. Nach den Befreiungskriegen und der… dann einsetzenden Restauration galt die Turnbewegung jedoch plötzlich als staatsgefährdend. Jahn wurde 1819 verhaftet, 6 Jahre gefangen gehalten und danach unter Polizeiaufsicht gestellt. Die vorliegende Schrift betrachtete er als sein Testament in Sachen deutscher Kultur, deutscher Sprache, Politik und Geschichte. "Wer mit den früheren Schriften des Verfassers vertraut ist: dem Deutschen Volksthum, der Deutschen Turnkunst, den Runenblättern . wird einen alten Bekannten wiederfinden . und (auf die Frage,) wie's seitdem gegangen, die Kunde bekommen: älter, aber nicht kälter" (S.
