"Als ein Ergebnis seiner Arbeit über Kinderspielzeug erfand Gustav Lilienthal die Idee von Bauklötzen aus künstlichem Stein, nicht aus Holz oder Keramik. Weil die Klötze aus Stein schwerer wären und eine rauhere Ob…erfläche hätten, würden mit ihnen erzeugte Bauwerke nicht so leicht auseinanderfallen. Zusammen mit seinem Bruder, dem Ingenieur Otto, entwickelte Gustav künstliche Steine aus Sand, pulverisiertem Kalk und Farbstoff unter Verwendung von Leinölfirnis als Bindemittel. Jedoch verkauften die Brüder ihre Erfindung 1880 an Friedrich Adolf Richter, dieser führte 1894 auch die Reihe Neue Folge (NF) ein. Zur besseren Identifizierung der einzelnen Modelle wurden die Kasten nicht nur durch eine Nummer, sondern auch durch ein "Telegraphwort" identifiziert. Acht verschiedene Telegraphierworte wurden für die verschiedenen Sprachen benutzt - Deutsch, Französisch, Englisch, Holländisch, Dänisch, Polnisch, Tschechisch und Ungarisch.
