The book is structured in two complementary parts. Beth's contribution takes a historico-critical approach, surveying the philosophy of mathematical reasoning from Aristotle and Descartes through Kant, Leibniz, and the great modern logicians--Frege, Russell, Hilbert, Brouwer, and others--examining how mathematical demonstration works and what role intuition plays alongside formal proof.
