Rudolf II was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and a member of the House of Habsburg, ruling from 1576-1612. In his early years, Rudolf lived in Vienna; at the age of eleven,… his family sent the boy to live with his uncle, King Phillip II, in Spain. Due to his strict Catholic education, he had no contact with Protestantism or the ideas of the Reformation. In 1576, as the oldest surviving son of Maximilian II, Rudolf II rose to the throne as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. His other titles included King of Bohemia, Hungary, and Croatia; Margrave of Moravia; Archduke of Austria. Many national and familial divisions awaited him once he became Emperor. Unlike the centralized state of Spain, the Austrian Empire was a loose association of territories that had differing legal traditions, cultures, and languages: nowhere near a centrally governed nation-state. These territories also had differing Christian groups which resulted in constant religious conflict. Although the Habsburg family was Catholic, Rudolf was not religious and refused to support hardline Catholicism. Instead, Rudolf desired to unify Christendom in the Empire and tried to take a tolerant stance on religious issues. For example, he tried to lead a crusade against the Turks in an attempt to give the Empire a unifying cause; however, his efforts ended poorly and led to discontent among his subjects. From the library Dr. Owen Hannaway. Hannaway was director of the Center for the History and Philosophy of Science at Johns Hopkins University. He authored numerous books and served as an editor of academic magazines in the history of science. Non di guerre, se non quando il riferimento diviene strettamente necessario, né di politica intesa nel senso p…iù limitato del termine, si parla in questo libro, ma di potere. Quel potere che portò gli Absburgo a creare, in un secolo e mezzo, un impero che Maria Teresa ereditò all'apice del suo splendore e che restò, per altri due secoli, al centro della politica europea. Un impero mai omogeneo e compatto, e che pure fu tenuto insieme da sottili e complicati fili di rapporti che convergevano nella figura dell'imperatore, dell'Absburgo, piuttosto che nell'Istituzione imperiale. Un potere politico, indubbiamente, conquistato fra il XVI e il XVII secolo legando via via a sé le grandi famiglie di nobili e potenti boemi, moravi, magiari e tedeschi, ma soprattutto con il fondamentale aiuto della Chiesa cattolica che vedeva negli Absburgo, pur con qualche minaccia, l'unica via per riconquistare il terreno perduto con la Riforma. Ma anche un potere economico, e soprattutto culturale. Il grande Barocco dell'Europa Orientale, la cultura della Controriforma, la musica e l'architettura, le università e le biblioteche e, in notevole misura, la scienza e l'occultismo che tanto affascinarono gli imperatori absburgici (si pensi a Rodolfo II) diventano, nell'analisi di Evans, elementi fondamentali di una mentalità, di una «weltanschauung» che sola può spiegare la straordinaria ascesa della monarchia absburgica.
