The 'Praeparatio' consists of fifteen books which have been completely preserved. Eusebius considered it an introduction to Christianity for pagans. But its value for many later readers is more because Eusebius studded this work with so many lively fragments from historians and philosophers which are nowhere else preserved. Here alone is preserved Pyrrho's translation of the Buddhist 'Three marks of existence' upon which Pyrrho based Pyrrhonism. Here alone is a summary of the writings of the Phoenician priest Sanchuniathon of which the accuracy has been shown by the mythological accounts found on the Ugaritic tables. Here alone is the account from Diodorus Siculus's sixth book of Euhemerus' wondrous voyage to the island of Panchaea where Euhemerus purports to have found his true history of the gods. And here almost alone is preserved writings of the neo-Platonist philosopher Atticus along with so much else. / DEMONSTRATIO EVANGELICA (Proof of the Gospel) is closely connected to the Praeparatio and comprised originally twenty books of which ten have been completely preserved as well as a fragment of the fifteenth *[in this edition marked 'Liber XI', see above]. One of the earliest printed editions of Eusebius of Caesarea's Historia ecclesiastica, translated from the Greek into Latin by the monk and theologian Rufinus of Aquileia (d. AD 411). This edition, the second to be published in Italy, was preceded by three others, printed in Utrecht, Strasbourg, and Rome. It is the last of about seven known books whose printing was attributed to Schallus (Mantua, between 1475 and 1479). Eusebius (d. AD 339) wrote the Historia ecclesiatica during the reign of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of Rome, and ended his narrative before the death of Constantine's son Crispus in July AD 326. It is the most important contemporary history of the early Church, and one of the most valuable historical sources written in the late antiquity, especially noted for its detailed description of the various early sects, movements and schisms within the burgeoning church. This edition includes the continuation by Rufinus of Aquileia of the history down to the year 403 AD. The inscription to the front pastedown reads 'Questa edizione trovasi pregiatissima presso tutti i bibliografi ed il presente esemplare à riguardevole per la sua bella conservazione' ('This edition is very valuable to all bibliographers and the present example is remarkable for its good condition'). Stemma dello stampatore all'ultimo foglio, mentre il nome del tipografo Henricus Petrus è stato biffato a penna al colophon (excudebat Henricus Petrus, mense Augusto 1542). Bruniture ad alcune pagine (per es. all'inizio del vol 2) dovute al tipo di inchiostro; qualche piccola gora marginale; ma nel complesso ottimo esemplare a larghi margini. La cancellazione a penna del nome del tipografo dimostra la provenienza "cattolica" di questo volume: Henricus Petrus era infatti protestante e stampatore della Bibbia di Lutero; i suoi libri in Italia circolavano dunque senza permesso ecclesiastico. La firma di possesso alla pagina di titolo è di Alessandro de Curtis. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena, tassello di titolo dorato al dorso; una mancanza (7x10 cm) al piatto del primo volume, in basso.
