Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. F. Gaillard, Carbonneau (illustrator). Third American Edition. 8vo - over 7¾. xvi, 319 pp. First important work considering life and output of Bertel Thorwaldsen (also spelled Thorwaldsen and seen other ways as well). In his day Thorwaldsen was considered the greatest living sculptor, often compared favorably with Michelangelo. Today he is probably best known for the Lion of Lucerne, for which he drew up the plans but did not actually execute the carving of. Yet in some ways this was an atypical work of a sculptor whose style was in the neo-classical mode and who concentrated mostly on human figures, often presented as gods in the vein of ancient Rome or Greece. In time his formalism gave way to the rawer renderings of Rodin and the less representational approach of modernism. Thorwaldsen, though, had an outsized influence as the mentor of many other sculptors, whom he apprenticed and employed in his very active Roman workshop, where for most of his adult life he lived as an expatriate. This copy of Plon is tight and clean. A minor bump and ding on the otherwise rather bright brown cloth binding.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 2nd Edition. Decorative blue boards with stamped Victorian scroll work design and gilt lettering. Illustrated with 2 frontis copperplates of Venus and Mercury and 39 in-line woodcuts. Heavy wear to boards with spine and edges torn, soiled page edges, hinges cracked; lengthy inscription on inside first title page. Assumed 2nd edition (1874) with additional woodcuts. Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770 - 1844) was a Danish sculptor and medalist of international fame who spent most of his life in Italy. Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen into a working-class Danish/Icelandic family, and was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art at the age of eleven. Working part-time with his father, who was a wood carver, Thorvaldsen won many honors and medals at the academy. In Rome, Thorvaldsen made a name for himself as a sculptor. Maintaining a large workshop in the city, he worked in a heroic neo-classicist style. Upon his return to Denmark in 1838, Thorvaldsen was received as a national hero. The Thorvaldsen Museum was erected to house his works next to Christiansborg Palace.
