First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. LAKE KARIBA FISHES ZAMBIA EUGENE BALON 1974 HARDCOVER VERY GOOD CONDITION. As I am sure anyone interested in African fisheries issues will know, the Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River at the border between what was then Rhodesia and Zambia created one of the largest, if not the largest man-made impoundment in Africa, known as Lake Kariba. Some call it Africa s Rivera for the thriving tourism industry found there; others note its strong commercial fishery. The dam was originally established with the idea of generating hydro-electric power but became quite controversial during its creation and filling as it flooded out the Gwembe Valley and the indigenous Tonga peoples who lived there. This book, however, was written from the perspective of an informed ichthyologist fascinated by the creation of an entirely new fishery. For your consideration, I am pleased to offer a nice hardcover book titled: Fishes of Lake Kariba Lengths-Weight Relationship, and a Pictorial Guide by Eugene K. Balon. This large hardcover book was published by T.F.H. Publications out of Hong Kong and dated 1974. The book is bound in glossy hardcovers with the image of a fish on the cover and black titles on the spine. The book measures 8 x 11 ½ inches and contains 144 pages. The book is very well illustrated, with both b&w and some color photos (of the fish). Condition: This book is in very good condition. There is some tape remnants on the spine suggesting a shelf label but this is the only marking on or in the book. The corners of the covers are a bit bumped and the glossy finish a bit scuffed but all in all, it is very presentable. Inside, as noted above, there are no marks although there is a small bit of a water stain, seen on the upper left-hand corner of the covers which does get into some of the early pages of the book, without affecting illustrations or text. The hinges are fully intact and the binding is tight and sound.
