Punto metallico --- In Hungary formerly, and elsewhere well into early modern times, Siebenburg Christians of the Byzantine tradition were able to maintain their ecclesial tradition only as a discriminated minority. Then the Protestant Ref…ormation split the Latin-rite Catholics into four legally recognized religious confessions, while the legally unprotected Byzantine Christians became the prey of Protestant proselytism. By erecting a bishopric for the Byzantine Christians, a Catholic ruler in the 16th c. was able to strengthen their church life, but did not succeed in upgrading their social standing. Those Byzantine Christians who did not wish to remain a prejudiced minority had to adhere to a western confession: in the 17th c. by joining a Reformed Church; in the 18th c. by accepting Union with the Catholic Church. Only in the 19th c. with the reforms of Kaiser Joseph II did it become possible for Christians of the Byzantine tradition to achieve social advancement without abandoning their religious confession.

Punto metallico -- In 1669, instructions from Rome ordered Jesuit missionaries working in Siebenbürgen to strive for a union of the Romanians with Rome on the model of the Union of Florence, with the Romanians retaining the right to k…eep their church tradition unchanged. When the Jesuits were successful and the Hungarian Primate Cardinal Kollonitz and Kaiser Leopold I had to ratify the Union, they sought to prevent what Rome had wanted, preferring instead to have the Romanians join the Catholic Church of the monarchy so the union could be exploited for political purposes. For this reason, many Romanians refused the union. This resulted in the formation of two parties within the Romanian Church of Siebenbürgen: those who accepted the union (the united) and their opponents (the non-united). In 1761, after decades of strife, Maria Theresa permitted a bishop to be appointed for the opponents of the union. Since then the Sibenbürgen Romanians have been split between two Churches.
