Gesetzt in Alter Schwabacher (Fraktur). Ernst Horneffer (* 7. September 1871 in Stettin; gestorben 5. September 1954 in Iserlohn) war ein deutscher Philologe, freireligiöser Dozent, Freimaurer und Philosoph. Horneffer verbreitete seine Auffassungen vor allem in Vorträgen, die auch gedruckt erschienen. Über mehrere Jahrzehnte war die Auseinandersetzung mit Friedrich Nietzsche ein Schwerpunkt von Horneffers Tätigkeit. Zusammen mit seinem Bruder August Horneffer trat er 1899 ins Nietzsche-Archiv ein und war Mitherausgeber von veröffentlichten und nachgelassenen Schriften Nietzsches. Nach seinem Austritt aus dem Archiv kritisierte er öffentlich dessen Leiterin Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, unter deren Ägide keine wissenschaftlich korrekte Arbeit möglich gewesen sei. 1918 habilitierte er sich an der Universität Gießen, wo er seit 1920 als Professor für Philosophie wirkte. Stand er politisch zunächst freigeistigen und liberalen Strömungen nahe, so vertrat er in späteren Jahren auch völkische Ideen. In der Zeit der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft passte er einerseits sein Schrifttum an, zum anderen übte Horneffer in Vorträgen Kritik, weshalb ihm 1937 die Lehrbefugnis entzogen wurde. Von der Denazifierungskammer in Iserlohn erhielt er am 13. Februar 1948 ein Entlastungszeugnis. Er wurde als ein Opfer nationalsozialistischer Verfolgung anerkannt. August Horneffer (* 5. Juli 1875 in Treptow an der Rega; gestorben 8. Oktober 1955 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Philologe, Philosoph, freimaurerischer Schriftsteller, Freimaurer und Übersetzer. August Horneffer wurde am 5. Juli 1875 in Treptow an der Rega als Sohn eines preußischen Beamten geboren. Nach dem Besuch des dortigen Königlichen Bugenhagen-Gymnasiums zu Treptow studierte er an der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin (heute Humboldt-Universität) Philologie, Philosophie und Musikwissenschaft. Am 4. Mai 1898 erlangte er dort die philosophische Doktorwürde mit einer Arbeit über den Komponisten Johann Rosenmüller (1619-1684). Im Jahre 1900 folgte er einem Ruf an das Nietzsche-Archiv in Weimar, wo er gemeinsam mit seinem älteren Bruder Ernst Horneffer an der Herausgabe des Nachlasses Friedrich Nietzsches arbeitete. Nach einer Tätigkeit als Privatlehrer in der Schweiz und einer längeren Italienreise ging er zu Émile Jaques-Dalcroze nach Hellerau in Dresden. Während dieser Jahre beschäftigte er sich als freier Schriftsteller und Übersetzer griechischer und lateinischer Autoren und unterstützte seinen Bruder Ernst bei der Herausgabe der von diesem begründeten Zeitschrift Die Tat - Wege zu freiem Menschentum. Am 19. März 1911 wurde er in der Loge Zum aufgehenden Licht an der Isar zum Freimaurer aufgenommen. In der Folge wurde er bis ins hohe Alter - mit der Unterbrechung während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus - zu Vorträgen über die Freimaurerei herangezogen. Von 1916 bis 1921 gaben die Brüder Ernst und August Horneffer die für die Öffentlichkeit bestimmte freimaurerische Zeitschrift Der Unsichtbare Tempel heraus.
