Add to basketBoards in d.j. 1st thus. Royal octavo, original black cloth boards with gilt illustration of Odyssus from Hans Erni design upper board and gilt titles spine, dustjacket, b&w illus by Erni, pp 474. The book states a publication date of 1961, which is the first edition (with no indication of later printings), but the dustjacket ma…kes a reference to a Fitzgerald publication in 1971, so it is clearly later. The dustjacket has a small chip to the upper edge of the rear panel and some very minor loss to the upper edge of the spine. D.j. not price-clipped. The book has some very light rubbing to the head and foot of the spine. It is a beautiful, very clean copy. Very near fine condition in a very good dustjacket which is repaired and protected. Early printings of this edition in such excellent condition have become uncommon. It is a verse translation of Homer's Odyssey by the American poet Robert Fitzgerald. He worked on it for seven years, most of them in Italy: the translation was admired and was awarded the Bollingen Prize for translation. A reviewer quoted on the dustjacket states that "[Fitzgerald] has succeeded first in the most difficult feat of all, in finding a rhythm and a level of diction that makes us feel, as we should, that the Odyssey is the most continuously beautiful of all epics in the Western tradition.". Illus. Hans Erni (illustrator).
