Born in Dresden in 1909 as the son of a rabbi, he became a stalwart socialist and was forced to leave his home town when the National Socialists came to power. Together with his wife Lilo, he fled to Paris on the pretext of a honeymoon in 1933. An aspiring lawyer, Stein then needed to follow a new career path-for which the wedding gift of a Leica 35mm camera turned out to be the key. The hardships of flight and emigration revealed his outstanding talent as a sensitive portrait and street photographer. First in Paris and then, after 1941, in his New York exile, Fred Stein on his forays through the city became an "ethnologist of the urban space," his eye always out for special moments and the poetry of the metropolis. A silent observer, his pictures would capture typical scenes and places, as well as the special quality of life in the city. In a similar way, his portraits testify to the unobtrusive proximity in his relationship with people. The list of those portrayed reads like a Who's Who of 20th-century history: Hannah Arendt, Albert Einstein, Willy Brandt, Arnold Zweig, Egon Erwin Kisch, Bertold Brecht, Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dali, Martin Buber, Thomas Mann. (Verlagstext) Ernst Edler von Schuch, geboren als Ernest Gottfried Schuch, (* 23. November 1846 in Graz; ? 10. Mai 1914 in Niederlößnitz in Sachsen) war ein österreichisch-sächsischer Dirigent, der als Generalmusikdirektor der Dresdner Hofoper und durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Richard Strauss als dessen "Leibdirigent" berühmt wurde. Die über vierzig Jahre seines Schaffens in Dresden (1872?1914) werden als die Ära Schuch rezipiert. Schuch war der Sohn eines höheren Beamten. Nach seinem Abitur studierte er in Graz Jura, daneben musizierte er weiterhin wie bereits seit früher Kindheit (Geige, Klavier). Er leitete den Academischen Musikverein und war ein Schüler des Dirigenten Eduard Stolz. Dann immatrikulierte er sich in Wien und wurde Schüler von Felix Otto Dessoff. 1867, nach seiner juristischen Zwischenprüfung, begann er als Kapellmeister bei Theodor Lobe in Breslau. Es folgten Verpflichtungen in Würzburg (1868?1870), Graz (1870/1871) und Basel, bevor er 1872 nach einer Aufsehen erregenden Konzertreise unter Bernhard Pollini (1838?1897) durch Graf Julius von Platen als Musikdirektor für die italienische Oper in Dresden an die Hofoper engagiert wurde. Dort wurde er 1873 Königlicher Kapellmeister neben Julius Rietz, später neben Franz Wüllner. 1879 stieg er zum Leiter der Königlichen Kapelle auf. 1882 übernahm er die Direktion der Hofoper als Hofrat, womit er entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Programmgestaltung wie auch die Weiterentwicklung der Kapelle selbst nehmen konnte. 1889 wurde er zum Generalmusikdirektor ernannt. Die einaktige Oper ?Marga? Pittrichs u. a. mit dem Heiduckenlied ?In grauser Schlucht, auf hohem Saum? für Sänger mit Baritonstimme wurde unter Schuch 1894 aufgeführt. Im Jahr 1898 wurde Schuch vom österreichischen Kaiser in den erblichen Adelsstand erhoben und 1899 wurde er zum sächsischen Geheimen Hofrat ernannt.
