Este libro reúne por vez primera los textos más relevantes de la disputa entre los historiadores acerca de la singularidad del Holocausto y el papel que desempeña en la interpretación de la historia de Alemania después de 1945, lo cual fue un importante debate intelectual y político que se llevó a cabo en la antigua República de Alemania, entre 1986 y 1987. El origen directo de la controversia fue la publicación de un artículo en el Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung bajo el título Die Vergangenheit, die nicht vergehen will (El pasado que se niega a pasar. Un discurso que fue escrito, pero nunca pudo ser pronunciado) del historiador Ernst Nolte. Ahí, el autor describe el Holocausto como una reacción de los nacionalistas a los crímenes y exterminios previos de Stalin en la Unión Soviética, e incluso señala que el totalitarismo fue producto de la barbarie asiática introducida en Europa. Jürgen Habermas se opuso enérgicamente a esta tesis y la llamó "revisionismo" que, según él, debería renovar la conciencia nacional después de haberse liberado de un pasado tan desmoralizador. Desde la historiografía conservadora alemana se había creado la imagen de la historia de Alemania en la que no había lugar para el nacionalismo, el cual era considerado como un producto de criminales. Se mantenía la tesis de que el III Reich alemán había llevado a cabo una política militarista que provocó la Primera Guerra Mundial de 1914-18. En esta misma línea se observa que el nacionalsocialismo era tan sólo una consecuencia inevitable de tal política. Uno de los frutos más importantes de estas reflexiones políticas, historiográficas y filosóficas fue la expresión de Habermas "uso público de la Historia". Publicamos en este pequeño volumen, también, un ensayo sorprendente de Thomas Mann que escribió mientras estaba exiliado en California y suiza, entre la primavera de 1938 y 1939, y que se publicó por primera ocasión con el título en inglés That man is my brother. Ahí quería que el mundo viera al político Hitler como un artista fracasado. Thomas Mann lo devela como artista mediocre que se convierte en criminal por su falta de creatividad.
