Contact seller4-star sellerThe photo shows Nord, Lipton, Nord's lawyer, and guitar-strumming-singer Julie Meredith in an office with artworks strewn in front of them. The blurb at the bottom reads (in part): "Representatives of a beatnik hangout known as the Gas House in suburban Venice display some of their arts as they waited for the start of a Police Commission hearing yesterday to determine whether the Gas House should get an entertainment license." The Gas House, managed by Nord, was a popular beatnik spot in Venice that was always having difficulty with the police who wanted to suppress the beatniks. Contact seller4-star sellerPrints the story "Battle of the Beatniks," about how Eric Nord, founder of the Gas House and self-proclaimed "King of the Beatniks" in Venice Beach, was fighting the authorities who were blocking his attempt to get an entertainment license. The Gas House was the preeminent, though short-lived, epicenter of beat art and poetry where Berman's phrase "Art is Love is God" was emblazoned on the walls. The influx of people to Venice after the publication of Lipton's "The Holy Barbarians" caused the local police and tenants to suppress the beatnik activity at the Gas House which closed its doors after two years. Features 5 pages and 14 photographs. Very good plus. …
