The author writes in the foreword "I suppose this book will confuse people familiar with the first two books in The Lakers series. After all, they were color pictorials while this book has the audacity to proclaim itself an encyclopedia. However, while the two concepts may not seem compatible, it's always been my intention to offer a trilogy of books under The Lakers banner. One group would and will be the color pictorials. Another will be a series of chronological studies such as this book. The goal is to offer the reader an organized, comprehensive look at the Great Lakes shipping industry.

This book part of the Nickel Plate Road Historical and Technical Society.

The North Western material provides an interesting story of its trains and the iron ore industry. The FM era was added to help add balance and provide additional background material. The period we are looking at , 1965-1986, covers only a brief part of the overall story, yet is when the most significant changes took place in the iron ore industry.

Volume 1 in this series on the adoption of diesel by the Pennsylvania Railroad carefully examines management's thinking over the years as it struggled to support the coal industry (from which it derived a large portion of its business) through the continued use of steam while facing the gradual rise of the GM's EMD diesels.
