October in Nürnberg geboren, wurde 1846 in Erlangen promovirt, indem er die Diss. inaug., eine Arbeit über die Veränderung der weissen und rothen Blutkörperchen schrieb. Schon früh fühlte er sich zu den Naturwissenschaf…ten hingezogen. Zur Ausbildung in denselben und der Physiologie, der sich zu widmen ihn die Physiologen Johannes Müller und Rudolf Wagner zu Göttingen ermuthigten., besuchte der auch noch die Hochschulen zu Würzburg, Wien und Prag. Im Jahre 1848 wurde er Docent and Universität München, ein Jahr darauf zum Porfessor e.o. und im Jahre 1857 zum Prof. ord. ernannt. Neben seinen Vorlesungen über Physiologie beschäftigten ihn vorzüglich experimentelle Untersuchungen, zuletzt zur Erforschung der Physik der Nerven und der Vorgänge bei der Muskelaction, bei denselben kam ihm seine Begabung für die Mechanik besonders zu statten. Die Ergebnisse seiner Forschungen legte er in Abhandlungen nieder, welche in den Denkschriften der k. bayer. Akademie der Wissenschaften, der er seit dem Jahre 1856 als ausserordentliches Mitglied angehörte, veröffentlicht wurden. Seine Fachvorträge zeichneten sich Klarheit und Verständlichkeit aus. Er hielt solche auch über plastische Anatomie an der Akademie der bildenden Künste. Für letztere verfasste er ein: "Lehrbuch der plastischen Anatomie", welches 1856 in Stuttgart erschien. Seinen Schülern war er ein anregender Lehrer, seinen Collegen ein liebenswürdiger Freund. Schon im 41.Lebensjahre war er seiner Familie durch einen leukämischen Milztumor am 16.Februar 1862 entrissen."
