First Edition
2 vols, cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, [iv], 936 + iv, [1], 896 pp. Volume I "embraces all the various collections of deeds in the Department, namely, the Royal, Cotton, Harley, Sloane, Campbell, Lansdowne, Topham and Wolley Charters, together with the Additional and Egerton Charters acquired up to the year 1882 and a special series of Church Briefs. The Stowe Charters, acquired in 1883, have already been indexed in the Catalogue of the StoweMSS., 1895-1896; and an index to Charters before the Norman Conquest will be found in Vol. IV. of Facsimiles of Ancient Charters in the British Museum, 1873-1878. The more important entries, however, in the latter have also been inserted here. The present volume is confined to the topography of the Charters relating to the British Isles only, reserving for the present all Foreign documents. One of the chief points of interest and value of this Index lies in the evolution of modern place-names from the early forms found in the oldest documents, which have all been carefully traced by means of full cross-references." The second volume "unites in one alphabetical series: (1) A purely topographical index, on the same scheme as Vol. I., to all the deeds (Additional Charters 27005-45797, Egerton Charters 486-621, and the important and early Stowe Charters) acquired by the Department from the beginning of 1882 to the end of 1900 : thus completing, so far as places in Great Britain and Ireland are concerned, the index to all charters in the Department on the 1st of January, 1901; (2) Entries under corporate headings, such as England, Ireland, Scotland, and the various Orders, religious and otherwise, Monasteries and religious houses, and (under London) the College of Arms, City Companies and the like, referring as well to the deeds acquired before 1881, and topographically indexed in Vol. I., as to those acquired from 1882 to 1900. Every reference, therefore, to a Monastery or other corporation in any deed in the Department collections, old or new (Boyal, Cotton, Harley, Lansdowne, Sloane, Campbell, Topham, Wolley, Stowe, Additional or Egerton Charters), in the Museum at the beginning of 1901, is to be sought in this second volume". Bookplate on front pastedown endpaper of Volume II, otherwise Near Fine set.
