Januar 1917 gestorben am12. März 2004) war ein amerikanischer Künstler, der für seine abstrakten Gemälde bekannt war, die Maßstab mit der Dichte des Geschehens verbanden. Es war nicht ungewöhnlich, dass einige der größten Gemälde mehr als dreihundert Pfund wogen und fast ausschließlich aus Pigmenten bestanden. Er hatte eine lange und abwechslungsreiche Karriere, die etwa fünfundsechzig Jahre dauerte. Er schuf mindestens achthundert Leinwände und achttausend Arbeiten auf Papier und Karton. In den letzten dreißig Jahren seines Lebens schrieb er außerdem fast täglich Gedichte. Er war ein begeisterter Leser, fesselnder Redner und begabter Geschichtenerzähler, der in der Lage war, sich in Sitzungen, die bis zu drei Stunden dauerten, mit dem College-Publikum zu unterhalten.
