Teg. 11.25ins x 8.25ins, marbled endpapers, x, (ii), 148pp, 14pp plates. Some illustrations within the text. Two errata slips tipped-in. Main text is an alphabetical listing of villages and towns comprising 516 entries with a list of the bells in the church and, where known, who cast them and the date. The Somserset section finishes at page 100. The last 48 pages are the Olla Podrida (Hodgepot) of bell related matters. Occasional light foxing. Armorial bookplate to front pastedow, 1875

Signed to the front cover, "To F. P. Browne Witte from the Author". Bound in the publisher's original boards, with the addition of a cloth spine. Written by… the Rev. Henry Thomas Ellacombe, this work presents the history of church bells used in the religious buildings of Somerset, while also exploring the parishes to which the bells belong. With an Olla Podrida of bell related matters to the rear. Illustrated with fourteen plates containing numerous sketches of church bells. Collated, complete. Bound in the publisher's original boards, with the addition of a cloth spine. Externally, generally smart, with a few marks and age toning to boards. Small crease to the front board. Evidence of glue to the cloth spine. Internally, binding has split between p140-1, with the remaining binding slightly strained. First few pages are a little tight, possibly due to glue repair. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a few marks. Good. Not Stated (illustrator). signed by author. book.

Prelims. frontispiece and title page spotted, some very light marginal browning and occasional spotting, marbled e.ps., ex.-libris William Pollard, bound together in half red morocco with marbled board…s, rubbed and lightly soiled, corners bumped with sl. wear, raised bands and gilt title to lightly faded and sl. rubbed spine, t.e.g. Henry Thomas Ellacombe [Ellicombe], (17901885), campanologist and Church of England clergyman. '. His antiquarian interest in church bellringing led to him becoming recognized as possibly the first scholarly campanologist. His Practical Remarks on Belfries and Ringers, first published in 1849 and reaching a fifth edition in 1884, drew on his experience of reforming bellringing at Bitton, and included a description of the ingenious apparatus of chiming hammers that he had introduced there in 1822, at the suggestion of a local workman, to enable one person to chime all the bells in a steeple . He continued his scholarly contributions to campanology, publishing works on the church bells of Devon (1872), Somerset (1875), and Gloucestershire (1881) .'
