This substantial technical work provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics, techniques, and technology of remote sensing, including the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter and remote-sensing methods spanning the electromagnetic spectrum from the ultraviolet through microwave regions. Applications include the study of Earth's surface and oceans, atmospheric sensing, radiative transfer, and planetary science. A particularly noteworthy aspect of the book is its author. Charles Elachi was a professor at Caltech and later served as Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 2001 to 2016. His career included major contributions to spaceborne imaging radar and planetary observation, making this early edition an interesting piece of the technical literature surrounding the development of modern remote sensing.
