The first edition of Introduction to the Physics and Techniques of Remote Sensing was a comprehensive overview of the basics behind remote-sensing physics, techniques, and technology. This Second Edition builds on that overview through extensive updates, additions, and expansions in content and the replacement of almost 50 per cent of the figures. It discusses in detail the basic physics of wave/matter interactions techniques of remote sensing across the electromagnetic spectrum (UV, visible, infrared, mm, and microwave), and the concepts behind remote sensing techniques currently established and future ones under development. Applications of remote sensing are described for a wide spectrum of earth and planetary atmosphere and surface sciences, including geology, oceanography, resource observation and atmospheric sciences, and ionospheric studies.

"...upper level classes in applied physics, geology, planetary sciences, natural resource management, and environmental studies should consider this textbook for their collection." ( E–STREAMS, September 2007)
"...highly favorable...a handy reference for students and professionals alike." (Computers & Geosciences, August 2007)
"For professionals in the field and for students, where a thorough understanding of the physics and mathematics underlying the acquisition and analysis of remote sensing data is required, this book satisfies the need well." (Oceanography, December 2006)
The science and engineering of remote sensing―theory and applications
The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real–world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including:
The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave).
Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration.
The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises, along with a solutions manual, is provided.
This book is based on an upper–level undergraduate and first–year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. It is also recommended for any engineer or scientist interested in working in this exciting field.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. "Introduction to the Physics and Techniques of Remote Sensing ? Charles Elachi ? 1987 1st Edition A beautiful 1987 first-edition hardcover copy of Introduction to the Physics and Techniques of Remote Sensing by Charles Elachi, published by John Wiley & Sons as part of the Wiley Series in Remote Sensing and Image Processing. This substantial technical work provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics, techniques, and technology of remote sensing, including the interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter and remote-sensing methods spanning the electromagnetic spectrum from the ultraviolet through microwave regions. Applications include the study of Earth's surface and oceans, atmospheric sensing, radiative transfer, and planetary science. A particularly noteworthy aspect of the book is its author. Charles Elachi was a professor at Caltech and later served as Director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 2001 to 2016. His career included major contributions to spaceborne imaging radar and planetary observation, making this early edition an interesting piece of the technical literature surrounding the development of modern remote sensing. The 1987 edition was subsequently revised and expanded in later editions, making this an especially interesting copy for collectors of the history of remote sensing, radar, aerospace engineering, and Earth-observation technology. A highly desirable copy for a technical library, particularly for anyone interested in remote sensing, radar, aerospace engineering, Earth observation, planetary science, or the history of NASA/JPL technology. An excellent example of an important early work in modern remote sensing, predating the substantially revised later editions. Condition: Near Fine. The hardcover book and interior are exceptionally well preserved, with clean pages and an attractive binding. The dust jacket is also in Near Fine condition, showing only minor signs of age and handling. No significant writing, highlighting, or other markings noted. Please see photographs for details.
